Gary Redding

Gary Redding represents District 2 in Halifax County on Roanoke Cooperative’s Board of Directors. A native of Tillery, North Carolina, he grew up on his grandparents’ farm, where he learned the importance of hard work, service and caring for others.

Redding’s connection to Roanoke Cooperative spans generations. His grandfather, Matthew Grant, joined the cooperative’s board in the 1970s and served as chairman for many years. As a child, Redding often accompanied his grandfather to board meetings. Today, he is proud to continue that family legacy while bringing his own experience and perspective to the board.

Redding has taught at Halifax Community College for more than 12 years and serves as chair of the Criminal Justice Department. He also teaches English and is passionate about providing students with hands-on learning experiences. An attorney who became a Halifax County commissioner in December 2024, Redding brings experience in education, law, local government and community engagement. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in English from East Carolina University, as well as a Juris Doctor from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law.

His commitment to young people led him to help establish the Halifax County Junior County Commissioners program, which introduces high school students to local government, job shadowing and professional development. The initiative received a 2026 Innovation Award from the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

Redding also serves as chair of Concerned Citizens of Tillery and supports food distribution, youth tutoring, nursing home outreach and legal assistance initiatives. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, volunteering and serving as a caregiver for his mother and uncle.

As a director, Redding is committed to listening to and advocating for Roanoke Cooperative’s member-owners. He is particularly interested in expanding opportunities for young people to learn about the cooperative, explore careers in the electric utility industry and participate in internships and job-shadowing experiences.

“I want our member-owners to know that I will listen to their concerns, advocate for them and remain committed to serving our communities,” Redding said.
