The Power Pulse | March 2025: Progress, Cost Reductions, and Expanding Connectivity

As we move forward in 2025, Roanoke Cooperative remains dedicated to providing reliable electric service and universal access for all member-owners. We are working to make service more reliable, expand the fiber network, and manage costs. Our investments will bring long-term benefits to the community.

Addressing Energy Costs During Extreme Cold

This year began with one of the coldest Januarys on record, experiencing a polar vortex that significantly increased heating demands compared to January 2024 and other recent years. We recognize that this winter’s higher energy costs come not only from the increased heating demand but also from the rate adjustment implemented last year. We understand that many member-owners have dealt with higher-than-usual bills this winter. We remain committed to offering practical ways to manage these costs during peak seasons. We can help member-owners by offering energy-saving programs and tips, flexible payment plans, and support programs. We encourage member-owners to contact our member services team to explore suitable options.

Cost Reductions in 2025

When we announced the rate increase last year, we mentioned that we were anticipating some reductions as our investments started yielding results. We expect our ongoing efforts to help further distribute fixed costs more efficiently, contributing to continued cost reductions. These cost-saving measures are now in effect, resulting in an average reduction of $5.00 per every 1,000 kWh consumed throughout 2025. This progress is also driven by the nearing completion of the fiber network to member-owners that began in 2022. As we complete these investments, we anticipate further cost reductions due to the reduced need for additional projects. The efficiencies we are gaining will continue to benefit our member-owners as we work toward further financial sustainability.

Large Industrial Accounts & Financial Stability

The addition of large industrial accounts in late 2024 will positively impact our ability to manage costs. These new member-owners will help distribute the cooperative’s fixed costs more evenly, ultimately benefiting all member-owners. As these new member-owners grow their operations, so will the cooperative’s ability to stabilize rates and implement additional efficiency measures.

Existing Fiber Network Benefits

  • Service Availability to Member-Owners – The service is available to over 9,400 member-owners, and almost half are already subscribing.
  • High Satisfaction & Reliability – Subscriber satisfaction ratings outrank other providers, and the network offers the highest capacity and reliability in northeastern North Carolina.
  • Household Savings – Member-owners have experienced household savings of up to $100+ per month.

Strengthening the Future of Broadband: The eNCore Initiative

In 2025, we are taking a major step toward improving the fiber network access and reducing financial risks through our new collaboration with MCNC via eNCore. This initiative represents the next phase in our fiber network strategy, focusing on sustainable, long-term solutions for connectivity expansion.

  • What is eNCore? – A new initiative created by Fybe, MCNC, and Roanoke Cooperative to expand the fiber network access.
  • Collaboration Began in 2024 – We started our efforts to work with MCNC over 12 months ago. Tracy Doaks, president and CEO of MCNC, was the guest speaker at our 2024 Annual Meeting, where she talked about eNCore.
  • Expanding Connectivity – eNCore will bring high-speed internet to more underserved communities across North Carolina.
  • Reducing Financial Risk – Roanoke Cooperative transitions away from the expansive fiber network ownership while ensuring reliable service.
  • Strengthening Our Community – This initiative maintains economic growth and digital equity for all member-owners.

Through eNCore, the fiber network will stay available and reliable without further investments from Roanoke Cooperative.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to innovation and member-focused strategies continues to guide every decision we make. By focusing on efficiency, cost management, and mutually beneficial collaborations, we are ensuring a stronger future for Roanoke Cooperative and its member-owners.

Together, we are building a more connected and financially sustainable future.
