The conversation surrounding the future of rural economic development continues.
As part of Roanoke Cooperative's ongoing commitment to strengthening the communities it serves, cooperative leaders recently met with stakeholders and community leaders in Hertford and Halifax counties to continue discussions that will help shape Roanoke Cooperative's Community and Economic Development Action Plan.
These meetings represent the next phase of stakeholder engagement as the cooperative works to align local priorities with its Connect 2030 strategic vision and identify opportunities for meaningful investment throughout northeastern North Carolina.
Hosted in partnership with NC Cooperative Ready Partners, the Hertford County session brought together a diverse group of local and regional leaders, including representatives from Hertford, Bertie, and Gates counties. Participants included county officials, economic development professionals, community leaders, and Roanoke Cooperative leadership, all focused on a common goal: identifying ways to create stronger, more vibrant communities.

Throughout the sessions, participants explored county strengths and assets, discussed current challenges and barriers to growth, and identified emerging opportunities that could positively impact residents and businesses for years to come. Discussions also included a review of regional demographic, workforce, and economic trends, helping stakeholders better understand how cooperative resources can support community and economic development initiatives through 2030.
Leaders examined the role electric cooperatives can play in supporting economic vitality, workforce development, broadband expansion, quality-of-life improvements, and other initiatives designed to attract and retain residents and businesses in rural communities.
A similar discussion was held in Halifax County, where local stakeholders shared perspectives on community priorities and explored opportunities for future collaboration. Insights gathered from both meetings will help guide the development of Roanoke Cooperative's Community and Economic Development Action Plan and inform strategies that create lasting value for member-owners and the communities they call home.
As Roanoke Cooperative continues its planning efforts, stakeholder engagement will remain a critical component of the process, ensuring that local voices help shape the cooperative's path forward.
