We were honored to be a sponsor of the recent MLK, Jr. Essay Contest hosted by the Health and Wellness Ministry of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Held on Monday, January 19, 2026 in celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the event showcased powerful essays from students across Bertie County and Hertford County.
Students were inspired by Dr. King’s message, “The Time is Always Right to Do What is Right,” and shared thoughtful reflections through essays titled “Why Should I Do What’s Right.” A total of 133 essays were submitted, with 43 students presenting their work during the program. Six top essay winners were recognized and awarded $150 each.
The celebration continued into February during Black History Month, when the remaining student presenters were honored during a special worship service and received additional recognition and awards for their outstanding efforts. Every student who submitted an essay was presented with a certificate — a true testament that their voices matter and their leadership is valued.
The program also featured a video message from North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and educational resources provided by Southern Methodist University. Musical selections, dramatic presentations inspired by the work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, and moments of reflection helped make the event both meaningful and memorable.
