Roanoke Cooperative is doubling down on its commitment to ensure uninterrupted power supply through its latest ground to sky clearance initiative. In a recent interview with Jimmy Liverman, Vice President, Engineering & Operations at Roanoke Cooperative, significant insights were shared regarding the cooperative's proactive efforts in right-of-way maintenance.
Liverman highlighted recent strides in clearing vegetation around power lines, emphasizing the initiative's pivotal role in minimizing outage risks. " we've focused on completely clearing one side of trees along our power lines," Liverman explained. This meticulous approach aims to prevent tree branches from disrupting electrical infrastructure, particularly during inclement weather.
Addressing potential member concerns, Liverman noted that feedback has been generally positive, with occasional queries arising from yard trimming practices. Despite these minor concerns, the initiative has proven instrumental in bolstering system reliability. Liverman emphasized, "Reducing vegetation near the lines has significantly improved our ability to respond to storms and wind events, reducing outage durations by more than 50% during major incidents."
Financially, while acknowledging initial investment costs, Liverman underscored the long-term benefits. "It's a cost-effective strategy," he remarked. "By reducing downtime and enhancing member satisfaction, the initiative ultimately pays for itself."
In terms of operational logistics, Roanoke Cooperative collaborates closely with Xylem for vegetation management. Liverman disclosed adjustments from a 5-year to a 6-year cycle due to contract pricing, with intentions to revert to a 5-year cycle to maintain optimal coverage.
Looking ahead, Liverman outlined future plans to streamline yard tree management directly beneath power lines. This proactive approach aims to minimize the need for frequent maintenance, thereby optimizing operational efficiency and reducing costs over time.
Reflecting on achievements, Liverman expressed pride in the initiative's impact on outage reduction and member satisfaction. "Ultimately, our goal is to ensure reliable electricity for our members-owners," he concluded.
Roanoke Cooperative's proactive stance in ground to sky clearance not only underscores its commitment to service reliability but also sets a benchmark for sustainable utility management within its service territory. As they continue to refine their approach, Roanoke Cooperative remains dedicated to enhancing community resilience and operational excellence.
