Roanoke Cooperative was proud to be part of Progressive Ag Safety Day at Newsome Farms on April 2, joining community partners to share an important message with some of our youngest member-owners—safety always comes first. With students from several local schools, primarily elementary-aged, the day was filled with curiosity, energy, and hands-on learning that made a lasting impression.
From the moment students arrived, it was clear they were eager to learn. Progressive Ag Safety Day is designed to teach children how to stay safe in everyday situations, especially in rural and agricultural environments, and this year’s event delivered just that. Roanoke Cooperative was excited to bring a real-world perspective on electrical safety—something that plays a vital role in keeping our communities powered and protected.
Helping set the tone for each session, Glenn Brown, Environmental, Health & Safety Manager, kicked off the conversations with each group, introducing Shawn Dickerson, Coordinator of Energy Services, and Robbie Stallings, Service Technician. His introductions helped create an engaging and welcoming environment, encouraging students to ask questions and take an active role in learning.
Shawn and Robbie spent the day engaging with students and giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the tools and safety practices our crews rely on in the field. From protective gloves and sleeves to specialized equipment, students were able to see, touch, and even try on some of the gear that helps keep our line technicians safe while working around electricity.
The questions didn’t stop coming. Students were curious, thoughtful, and eager to understand how electricity works and what they can do to stay safe around it. From “What does this do?” to “What happens if a power line falls on your car?”—each question opened the door for meaningful conversations about the importance of respecting electricity and following safety guidelines.
Moments like these are what make events like Progressive Ag Safety Day so impactful. By creating a fun, interactive environment, students not only learn essential safety tips but also gain a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into keeping their lights on every day. It also gives our employees the opportunity to connect with the next generation and reinforce Roanoke Cooperative’s commitment to education, safety, and community.
At Roanoke Cooperative, we believe that knowledge is power—and when it comes to safety, it can make all the difference. We are grateful to have been part of such a meaningful day at Newsome Farms and look forward to continuing to empower our communities through education, engagement, and a shared commitment to staying safe.
