More Than a Day: Honoring the Skill, Safety, and Dedication of Our Line Technicians

There are some days that just feel right, and Line Technician Appreciation Day was one of them. With blue skies overhead and beautiful weather across our service territory, it gave us the perfect opportunity to pause and recognize the men who do more than keep the lights on—they look out for one another like family.

Because at the heart of every rescue, every drill, and every moment on the job, it starts with something simple and human.

“Are you okay?”  It’s the first instinct. Before the equipment, before the process, before anything else—it’s checking on your brother.

And when something’s not right, training takes over.

A mayday call goes out to the office—clear and direct with location, situation, and what’s needed. On the other end, dispatch moves quickly, setting the response in motion. There’s no hesitation—just a shared understanding that help is on the way.

At Roanoke Cooperative, our line technicians are the backbone of reliability. While many member-owners see the end result—lights on and power restored—what often goes unseen is the level of training, preparation, and specialized equipment required to do the job safely. Every task is grounded in safety, from the harnesses and fall protection gear they wear to the ropes, rigging, and insulated tools they trust with their lives—and each other’s.

During this year’s Pole Top Rescue and Bucket Rescue demonstrations, those skills were on full display. These aren’t just competitions—they are real-world simulations that reflect the critical situations line technicians train for year-round.

In the Pole Top Rescue, technicians climb with precision, secure themselves, and work quickly to reach a fellow lineman in distress. Using practiced technique and controlled movements, they stabilize and safely lower their brother to the ground. Strength, focus, and trust all come together in a matter of minutes.

The Bucket Rescue tells the same story from above. Working from an elevated bucket truck, technicians rely on their training, equipment, and coordination to safely bring a coworker down. Every movement is intentional. Every second matters. And safety is never compromised.

These moments reinforce a simple truth: safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a way of life. Our line technicians train over and over so that when the moment comes, their response is automatic, controlled, and focused on bringing everyone home safely.

We are proud to recognize the outstanding performances from this year’s rescue events:

Pole Top Rescue
• 1st Place – Griffin Strong (Time: 2:29.76)
• 2nd Place – Cameron Salmon (Time: 2:33.19)

Bucket Rescue
• 1st Place – Joshua White (Time: 46.10)
• 2nd Place – Benton Barrett (Time: 46.84)

These times represent more than speed—they reflect hours of training, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to safety and teamwork.

While we celebrate these achievements, appreciation for our line technicians goes far beyond a single day on the calendar. Their work continues in every season and every condition—through storms, heat, cold, and long nights—ensuring that power is restored and communities remain connected.

We invite our member-owners to join us in showing appreciation throughout the month by submitting a short video message of thanks. Your words mean more than you might realize to the men working behind the scenes.

Today, and every day, we celebrate our line technicians. Because this is more than just a day—it’s a reminder of the people who power our communities and the brotherhood that brings them home safely.
