As shared at our “Today, Tomorrow, Together” forum in Halifax on July 24th
At Roanoke Cooperative, we’re proud to serve a community of engaged, forward-thinking member-owners. One of those voices, Tonya Peters, joined us at our recent Today, Tomorrow, Together forum in Halifax to share how her experience with the Cooperative has transformed her home—and her outlook.
Tonya first became a member-owner in 2013. Like many, she didn’t initially realize just how many services and resources were available through the Cooperative. That changed when she started paying closer attention to what was showing up in her mailbox—flyers and information about energy efficiency and smart thermostats.
Curious, she scheduled a free home energy assessment. That one call led to lasting impact. The Cooperative installed a smart thermostat that now helps manage energy use during peak hours—especially useful during the hot summer months. We also added a device to her water heater, helping reduce energy consumption during high-demand times. “It’s been working very well,” Tonya shared. “It just runs in the background—and my bill stays steady.”
When Fybe broadband service became available, Tonya was quick to make the switch. As someone who relies heavily on smart home devices—including eight security cameras—and streaming services, she needed reliable, high-speed internet. Before the switch, buffering was a constant problem. Now, streaming is smooth, even with multiple devices running. “The best part is the price stays the same,” she told us. “No surprises like I used to get with other providers.”
Later, Tonya took advantage of our Upgrade and Save program. After speaking with a representative, she moved forward with energy-efficient HVAC system. Within two weeks, the process was underway. Our team returned to reassess her home, identified a clear need, and got started. “The technician walked me through everything. The payments go right onto my electric bill—and it’s far more manageable than refinancing or taking out a loan.”
The service she received left a lasting impression. “Everyone has been so helpful,” she said. “They return calls, explain everything, and make sure you’re taken care of.”
About a year ago, Tonya was invited to join Roanoke Cooperative’s Advisory Board. While she wasn’t sure what to expect, she quickly realized how much more there was to learn and share. “I found out about programs and services I didn’t even know existed—and I want others to know too.”
Her message to fellow member-owners? Don’t overlook the details. “Sometimes we throw away those little flyers or mailers, but they can lead to something that makes a real difference.”
Tonya’s story is a powerful reminder of what happens when member-owners connect with the services and people behind Roanoke Cooperative. We’re grateful she shared her journey—and proud to walk alongside her as we build a stronger, more connected community.
