Empowering Tomorrow: Roanoke Cooperative Supports the Surge of Solar Energy in U.S. Generation

In a promising shift towards sustainable energy, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts a significant rise in solar power's contribution to the nation's total generation. According to the latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, the solar share is set to increase to 5.6% in 2024 and 7% in 2025, up from 4.0% in 2023.

The EIA predicts that solar power will spearhead growth in electricity generation, with 36 GW and 43 GW of new solar capacity expected to come online in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

This anticipated surge reflects a broader trend towards cleaner energy sources, aligning with the commitment to a more sustainable future. As the U.S. seeks to diversify its energy portfolio, solar and wind generation are poised to play pivotal roles. The EIA forecasts an overall 3% growth in U.S. generation in 2024, with no change expected in 2025.

Notably, the growth of solar and wind comes at the expense of coal-fired power plants, which are anticipated to decrease by 9% in 2024 and 10% in 2025. This decline is attributed to the higher costs associated with coal compared to renewable sources and a planned retirement of 12 GW of coal-fired capacity.

Meanwhile, natural gas generation is projected to remain unchanged over the period from 2023.
