Empowering Roanoke Cooperative’s Board: Director’s Day and the Changing Energy Landscape

As new challenges arise in the energy industry, Roanoke Cooperative’s (RC) board members understand it is essential to stay up to date on the business operations that serve and benefit its members. As part of their ongoing commitment to understanding how the co-op’s business model is performing, RC’s nine board members recently dedicated an entire day to interacting with co-op employees from all departments. This annual visit is known as "Director’s Day," during which all co-op employees prepare presentations to help board members grasp the challenges and successes of day-to-day operations. Each board member is also a member-owner, representing one of the Cooperative’s directorate districts. Technology advances rapidly in all aspects of the utility industry - in engineering, operations, member services, communications, human resources, IT, the warehouse, broadband services, and beyond.

"An ever-changing business environment has created new demands on electric cooperative directors," stated Marshall Cherry, CEO. "This requires an increased understanding of the electric utility business. Events like Director’s Day help them sharpen their knowledge for the benefit of our member-owners. Our board members are actively engaged in how advanced technology impacts electric cooperatives."
