Roanoke Cooperative is thrilled to announce the recipient of this year’s $1,000 scholarship—congratulations to Jalin Bell!
Jalin, a senior at Bertie High School and dual-enrolled student at Martin Community College, has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to academics, service, and leadership. He is an active member of the National Society of High School Scholars, served as a Junior Marshall for the Class of 2024, and is a proud inductee of both Alpha Beta Gamma and Phi Theta Kappa honor societies.
Beyond the classroom, Jalin has made a lasting impact through his involvement with Future Farmers of America (FFA). Under the mentorship of the late Mr. Brian Reynolds, Jalin helped grow and distribute fresh produce through the Windsor Farmers Market and local food pantries—an effort that provided nutritious food to underserved members of the community from April to October 2023.
Jalin is also passionate about learning, gaming, and spending time with his family. His insightful scholarship essay demonstrated a deep understanding of how cooperatives like Roanoke Cooperative differ from traditional business models—focusing on community ownership, democratic governance, and shared member-owner benefits.
This fall, Jalin will attend UNC Charlotte, where he plans to major in Computer Science. We are proud to support him on this next chapter and look forward to the incredible future ahead.
